Proteins – The Backbone of the Entire Body

Every athlete knows that you have to eat proteins. But proteins are not only necessary to build up muscles, they are also the base material for the formation of our hair, nails, and tendons. Without proteins, we would not have any genes to pass on either.

It is not true that only foods of animal origin are great sources of protein. Besides eggs, milk, and meat, you should also not forget nuts and seeds, legumes, vegetables, and cereal. In addition to their high protein content, they are also packed with other useful things: essential fatty acids, fibers, vitamins, and minerals. They also help prevent heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and control cholesterol levels. Is there anyone who would not like to enjoy delicious and healthy meals that fill you up nicely without burdening your body? As a dietitian, I encourage you to add more vegetable protein sources to your diet – that way you will discover new tastes while pampering your health.

For instance, a great source of protein is highly nutritious chia seeds that also contain a wealth of fibers and are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. They also have high levels of magnesium and calcium, and a large percentage of antioxidants. Chia seeds add a nice touch to smoothies, salads, or desserts.

Almond flour, too, is a great nut flavoured alternative to those who would like to replace regular wheat flour with a healthier option. While almonds have a high protein content, they also contain lots of healthy fats, fibres, potassium, and phosphorus. They fill you up and make a perfect snack. A particularly good combination is to eat a fruit with a small handful of almonds as a snack.

This October, I will bring you the beauty and benefits of vegetable proteins as part of the Healthy Food Days at the Delice and Solaris stores.
